Models of colour are discriminated in this industry. You are either not tall enough, not thin enough or dare I say not white enough!
I see castings and threads all about caucasian models who have to be a size 6 and 5 ft 10 and think "what's happened to the real beauty of the world ?". Not every beautiful woman is that height, race or proportions! Modelling is an attempt to promote beauty, so why is it numerous times we see women who look like they haven't had a good meal in a while? They look miserable as they walk the runway and have nothing feminine about them ! I repeat NOTHING !
As being 5 ft 5 myself and mixed race (persian-indian), I have heard all types of rejections in this industry. You aren't tall enough, you have wide hips, your bust size is too small,we are looking for redheads and this assignment is only for caucasian women!
Models of colour face an added challenge! Not only do they have to fight everyone else for work to be recognised but because they aren't white, The fashion council refuses to take them seriously! The most beautiful and exotic models ARE ALL of colour! Look at Naomi Campbell , Iman , Alec Wek , Rita Faria and Deepika Padukone..they all have one thing in common...THEY ALL ARE MODELS OF COLOUR!
These beautiful ladies have fought aganist the odds and come on major fashion runways and yet everytime I watch a fashion show its the same androygynous miserable females I see on there!
Modelling for a female model is being feminine and showcasing curves and life, not misery! So why is it, that there should be a strict size guideline and height restriction in order to model? It is famously known that mediterrean and asian ladies arent tall and black ladies are thick. So what's wrong with that?
It's a characteristic of their race. You don't see fashion houses saying "Im sorry we can't take you on, you aren't white enough ". Any shape or form, experience or not, they are favoured above a coloured model who will have worked twice as hard!
Recently I read a press release from the British Fashion Council saying they didn't want to work with black models are they harder to get work for !? This is a form of racism and yet the modelling industry decides to stay quiet about it ? Why ?!?
Together, as models of colour we can stamp out this mayhem of racial profiling and gain equal work in this industry as we deserve it. The most beautiful women in the world are of colour! |
