Interview with Sunshine King
Models of Diversity's Riccardo Hoyte had an amazing interview with the wonderful Miss Sunshine King

RH: Good day, Where are you from?

SK: I was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland

RH: What made you decide to do modelling?

SK: I started out dancing and notice how the two worlds meshed well with my creativity.

RH: How did you get into modelling?

SK: I started of modelling with my next door neighbour Felicia Dietrich www.feliciadietrichdesigns.com and www.myspace.com/fdcdesigns the one and only fabulous Crochet designer at the age of 5.

RH: How long have you been modelling?

SK: I have been since the age of 5 I am now 31 years old so that will be 26 years of HARD WORK with no compensation I feel It's time to get professional paying work now.

RH: What is your biggest job modelling?

SK: Being the First and Only wheelchair model in Baltimore's Fashion Week 2009 and 2010.

RH: What are the biggest challenges you face?

SK: My biggest challenge is to get designers to feel comfortable with me wearing their garments. Going to casting calls and being rejected because they don't want to put in a ramp to their stage is also a challenge. I look and feel great 99.9% of the time and have more energy than half of the other models. I just don't understand why people aren't able to Think Outside Of the box!

RH: What do you feel about the modelling industry?

SK: I feel that this industry needs to be more progressive in their thinking

RH: What do you feel your duties are to other disabled people trying to get into modelling?

SK: I want to be a role model in this new industry for people in wheelchairs. People with real disabilities are never showcased; we are always portrayed by actors who have no clue about our lives.

RH: What do you feel is different between American Modelling industry and England's Modelling industry?

SK: I believe that the England's modelling industry is more receptive to the new and different. Here in the U.S we are still stuck on old standards of beauty and fashion.

RH: Do you feel changes need to be made in modelling?

SK: Yes more Diversity and encouragement is what I am doing with my group Sunshine Models on Wheels. I am glad to see you are promoting the same.

RH: What do you think of our campaign Models of Diversity and what we are about?

SK: I love it! I've been doing this since 2005 and I am glad that you are going that extra mile.

RH: What are your dreams and goals?

SK: For the world to know Sunshine King!!! Also to inspire others with spinal chord injuries to be bold and live your dreams. I am doing this with my company called Sunshine Project H.E.L.P. (Healing, Educating and Loving People) and Sunshine Models on Wheels.

RH: What would you say to all our models and followers of MOD that want to be party of the modelling industry?

SK: Follow your Dreams and Go for it.

RH: Do you have any questions you would like to ask Models of Diversity?

SK: When can I bring my cast to show you who we are? Also can you become one of our Sponsors for our Notice ME Tour. Please go to www.sunshineprojecthelp.com for more information and support our mission.

RH: Yes we could do that. It would be wonderful to be associated with you and your projects. It was a pleasure interviewing you and thank you for allowing us. We wish you all the best in your project and goals.
